Nothing to do with texting, but I had to acknowledge the loss of the legendary Lena Horne. She passed today at the age of 92. She was stunning, and blessed with a great voice. Lena always seemed to be the epitome of class and elegance, even with all she had to endure during the height of racism. God rest her soul.
For those of you who may not be text literate-texterate? tixterate? Anyway, look to your right and you will find links to two handy text translators, so you can join in the fun!
Two tangentially related stories today:
First, school administrators at a San Francisco Bay Area high school told a group of boys that they had to go home, or face suspension. Their crime? Wearing American flag t-shirts on Cinco de Mayo day at the school. The boys were told that the shirts were “incendiary”, and that “today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it’s supposed to be their holiday.”
There is absolutely nothing wrong with students of Mexican ancestry wishing to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. However, this day has no significance whatsoever for Americans, so for the administrators to punish these boys for wearing American flag t-shirts on this day, is ridiculous. This is America! There is nothing wrong with being tolerant of others’ wishes to celebrate things related to their heritage. At the same time, there is no way in hell, Americans should be punished if they choose not to celebrate with them. And yes I know apparel imprinted with the American flag is a violation of the flag code, but that is a whole ‘nother story
So, my text message to these administrators would be: WTF! oder countiries dnt celebr8 American hols so Y? shd we B forced 2 celebr8 theirs. w@ wud U txt?
In the second story, an Ann Arbor elementary school principal is on the defense, trying to justify why his school excluded white students from a school field trip. His excuse was that black students needed extra “efforts to close the achievement gap between white and black students.” That in itself is commendable. But, white students need role models and inspiration too, and there is no good reason they should have been excluded.
W@ wud I txt to this principal? Diversity mns ll shd B incl. W@ wud U txt?

Be honest. Isn’t this what you want to say to people sometimes?
Tell me, what do you say to someone like this? A young dope man in the Chicago area sent a text mesage to his drug connection, asking about a purchase. Unbeknownst to him, the connec had been busted and his text fell into the wrong right hands. The police arrived and arrested him for possession of a controlled substance. If you had his cell phone number, what would you text to him? Maybe something like ph 1st? Or, maybe send him a shirt like this ? I don’t know-is it me-or r crims getN dumR n dumR? Maybe next time he should send a pre-text. Something along the lines of B4 I ask u bout d dope,1st tel R U W d po-po?
Welcome! Come on in and get ready to cyber-vent. Psychologists (armchair and licensed) say that it helps to write things down when you’re upset or angry. Expressing your thoughts may help you feel better. Well, we also know that unfortunately, in this day of computers and cell phones, people don’t write nearly as often as they used to. Here we have the best of both worlds. You get to vent and rant and tell people just how you feel, but in a high tech sort of way. We will talk about stupid things stupid people do, or great things not-so-stupid people do. Imagine you have the subject’s cell phone number and write what you would text to them in response to whatever they said or did. Then you will feel better. At least in theory. LOL
