What the …?
Two tangentially related stories today:
First, school administrators at a San Francisco Bay Area high school told a group of boys that they had to go home, or face suspension. Their crime? Wearing American flag t-shirts on Cinco de Mayo day at the school. The boys were told that the shirts were “incendiary”, and that “today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it’s supposed to be their holiday.”
There is absolutely nothing wrong with students of Mexican ancestry wishing to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. However, this day has no significance whatsoever for Americans, so for the administrators to punish these boys for wearing American flag t-shirts on this day, is ridiculous. This is America! There is nothing wrong with being tolerant of others’ wishes to celebrate things related to their heritage. At the same time, there is no way in hell, Americans should be punished if they choose not to celebrate with them. And yes I know apparel imprinted with the American flag is a violation of the flag code, but that is a whole ‘nother story
So, my text message to these administrators would be: WTF! oder countiries dnt celebr8 American hols so Y? shd we B forced 2 celebr8 theirs. w@ wud U txt?
In the second story, an Ann Arbor elementary school principal is on the defense, trying to justify why his school excluded white students from a school field trip. His excuse was that black students needed extra “efforts to close the achievement gap between white and black students.” That in itself is commendable. But, white students need role models and inspiration too, and there is no good reason they should have been excluded.
W@ wud I txt to this principal? Diversity mns ll shd B incl. W@ wud U txt?
